What is NovaSure® endometrial ablation?

NovaSure endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that removes the lining of your uterus, called the endometrium. 

While there are several different types of endometrial ablation available, NovaSure is unique because it uses patented, gentle radiofrequency energy to safely ablate and remove the endometrium.

You only need to come to Women’s Health Specialists, PLLC, one time for endometrial ablation using NovaSure. During your single procedure, the team inserts a thin-handled wand into your uterus, where it delivers energy for around 90 seconds. 

You can go home the same day and expect your menstrual bleeding to slow or stop within a year of the treatment. 

For some women, endometrial ablation is an alternative to a hysterectomy, which removes the entire uterus. However, just like with a hysterectomy,  you should only consider endometrial ablation if you don’t plan on getting pregnant in the future. 

What does NovaSure endometrial ablation treat?

Your period happens when your uterus sheds the endometrium or lining, so ablating the lining eases heavy bleeding permanently. In particularly severe cases, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding can cause symptoms of anemia (low blood count).

You might still be able to get pregnant after endometrial ablation, but doing so is exceptionally risky. You should continue using some form of birth control after the procedure. 

How should I prepare for NovaSure endometrial ablation?

Although NovaSure endometrial ablation is minimally invasive, it requires some steps to prepare for a safe procedure. 

The team explains the process in detail and gives you a comprehensive examination, and might include imaging tests. Before your appointment, they might ask you to:

• Let your provider know if you might be pregnant
• Stop eating and drinking eight hours before the procedure
• Stop taking blood-thinning medications and supplements
• Take any prescribed medications to thin the endometrium 
• Bring a sanitary pad to wear after the procedure

The recovery process varies for endometrial ablation depending on whether or not you get anesthesia, your general health, and other factors. The team lets you know if you need to arrange a ride home from your visit or take additional steps to prepare you for your recovery.
