How Robot-Assisted Surgery Is Changing Women's Health

How Robot-Assisted Surgery Is Changing Women's Health

Gynecological surgery can be used as both a diagnostic tool and a treatment protocol, but it’s never the first option we try at Women’s Health Specialists, PLLC, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. If, however, we’re unable to diagnose a condition or treat it successfully with conservative techniques, we may recommend a minimally invasive procedure to do the job.

Our team of experienced physicians uses minimally invasive surgical techniques for both diagnostic and treatment purposes. We also use the robot-assisted daVinci® platform to perform some surgeries, allowing us greater precision and control, as well as consistently positive outcomes.

What is gynecology surgery?

Gynecology surgery includes a wide variety of procedures involving the organs and structures of the female pelvic region: the uterus, ovaries, cervix, fallopian tubes, vagina, and vulva.

Such procedures are used to treat conditions including, but not limited to, endometriosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts, cancer, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine prolapse, or abnormal bleeding. Gynecology surgery can also be used as a means of permanent birth control.

One of the most common minimally invasive surgical techniques is laparoscopy. The surgeon makes a few very small incisions in the lower abdomen to access the reproductive organs. They insert a lighted scope, known as a laparoscope, through one of the incisions, and it transmits live images with its built-in camera to a screen so the doctor can easily see the region.

The surgeon can either use the images to diagnose a condition that was not apparent with conservative techniques, or they can make repairs to the organs by using very small tools inserted through the other incisions.

The advantages of robot-assisted surgery

The team at Women’s Health Specialists, PLLC, uses robot-assisted surgery for abdominal hysterectomies.

In a robot-assisted hysterectomy, the surgeon uses a computer to control the surgical tools. The robot “hands” are capable of very fine movements and can reach into spaces where the human hand can’t fit.

The computer station sits in the operating room, and the surgeon sits at a console, controlling the robot’s movements steadily and precisely. In addition to precise motor control, the robotic system provides the surgeon with a better view of the surgical area than a standard laparoscopic procedure can give.

We’ve chosen robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedures to perform hysterectomies for a number of reasons, including:

While the robot-assisted procedure may take slightly longer than a regular laparoscopy, its benefits far outweigh the need for being under anesthesia for a longer period.

If you’re experiencing gynecological issues that haven’t responded to conservative methods of diagnosis or treatment, Women’s Health Specialists PLLC, can help with our laparoscopic and robot-assisted options.
