How daVinci® Robot Surgery Transforms Your Recovery Experience

How daVinci® Robot Surgery Transforms Your Recovery Experience

At Women’s Health Specialists, PLLC, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, we always try to diagnose and treat gynecological conditions with conservative techniques first, but if we’re unable to do so, we may recommend a minimally invasive procedure to get results.

Our team of experienced physicians uses the robot-assisted daVinci® platform to perform some procedures to enhance precision and minimize unwanted effects.

If you need robot-assisted surgery, here’s how the process can aid your recovery experience.

Why would I need gynecology surgery?

Gynecology surgery involves any procedure that addresses the organs and structures of the pelvic region in women, including the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, cervix, vagina, and vulva.

These procedures can confirm a suspected diagnosis or treat a condition such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, uterine prolapse, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). A minimally invasive procedure can also be used as a means of permanent birth control.

A laparoscopy is one of the most common minimally invasive techniques. The surgeon makes several very small incisions in the lower abdomen to access the organs in the pelvic region.

Next, they insert a lighted scope and camera through one of the incisions, which then transmits live images to a monitor so the doctor can easily see the region.

If the procedure is being performed for diagnostic purposes, the surgeon can use the images to either make or confirm a diagnosis that could not be done with conservative techniques. If it’s being performed for treatment purposes, they can remove tissue or repair any damage by inserting very small tools through the other incisions.

How daVinci transforms your surgical and recovery experience

At Women’s Health Specialists, PLLC, we use the robot-assisted daVinci platform for abdominal hysterectomies.

In a robot-assisted hysterectomy, the platform is only a tool – the surgeon retains complete control over the surgery. The advantage of using the system, though, is that the “hands” are capable of very fine and precise movements, and they can reach into small spaces where a human hand isn’t able to fit to perform necessary tasks.

The surgical system, including the control console, is in the operating room along with the patient, and the surgeon sits at the console to expertly control the robot’s movements and obtain incredibly precise images of the surgical area, much better than can be obtained with a standard laparoscopy.

The daVinci system also provides a number of important advantages to the patient, transforming their experience. These include smaller incisions, less blood loss, less pain, and less risk of complications like infections following the procedure.

All this adds up to a shorter and less painful recovery period, so you can get back to living your life more quickly and easily.

If conservative measures haven’t provided you with a firm diagnosis, or they aren’t able to treat the problem, a minimally invasive procedure with the daVinci platform may be a good next step.
