Ask These Questions at Your Next Women's Wellness Visit

You may wonder why you need to have a women’s wellness visit every year, but preventive care is an important part of staying healthy, and your doctor can catch problems at these appointments while they’re still early in their development and are easier to treat.
You can increase the efficiency of your visit by preparing a list of questions before you come in. If you’re unsure of what to ask, our team of experienced physicians at Women's Health Specialists, PLLC in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has these suggestions to offer.
The importance of women’s wellness visits
Women’s wellness visits, also called well-woman visits, don’t generally focus on a particular problem. Instead, the doctor uses the visit to focus on your overall health and wellness, and it’s structured to meet three primary goals:
- Documenting your health habits and history
- Getting a physical exam
- Setting health goals
In addition to the physical exam, the doctor may provide services like immunizations to prevent common diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) like HPV, the human papillomavirus.
They may also offer screening tests, like a Pap smear to check for cervical cancer, and they provide education about common conditions, as well as counseling to help you make informed decisions about your health.
When documenting your health habits and history, expect to answer questions about the following:
- You and your family’s medical history
- Mental health history
- Sexual activity and sexual partners
- Eating and physical activity habits
- Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use
- Medications, vitamins, and supplements you take
- Home life and relationships
During the physical exam, in addition to things like weight and height, the doctor may perform a breast exam to check for any lumps or areas of concern, and a pelvic exam to ensure your reproductive organs are healthy.
Questions you should ask at your visit
When coming in for a visit, it’s important that you be an active part of the process, so having a list of questions about your health and wellness is important.
If you’ve had any new symptoms, such as breast tenderness or discharge, unexplained weight gain, or pelvic pain, these are all things to bring up during your appointment so the doctor can address them.
Some other questions might be:
- Am I at risk for an STD? Should I get tested?
- Do I need any routine vaccines while I’m here? Which ones?
- Should I get a mammogram? How often is one recommended?
- Do I need a Pap smear?
- I’m having trouble getting pregnant. What could be the reason?
- What are the signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI)? Is there a test for that?
- Do I need to follow up with any specialists (i.e. cardiologist, retinologist, urologist)?
Certainly, if you have any questions about your reproductive health, Women’s Health Specialists PLLC is the right place to get answers, so ask away. We welcome the opportunity to inform you about and help you with your health.
